One recurring misunderstanding I see among Americans is the belief that living in Italy on a long-term visa can eventually lead to Italian citizenship. This assumption is understandable, but it is incorrect.
In the United States, the system works differently. A permanent resident with a Green Card may, after several years and meeting specific requirements, apply for U.S. citizenship. Residency is a recognized pathway to naturalization. Italy does not work that way. In Italy, residency alone does not lead to citizenship. Holding an elective residency or digital nomad permit allows you to legally reside in Italy. It does not place you on a track toward citizenship, regardless of how many years you remain in the country. |
